2004 Ford Taurus turn signal installation

yes, we read the manual several times, but cannot figure out how to remove the taillight assembly so we can replace the turn signal bulb. the drawing in the manual shows a flat surface to be removed with a screwdriver, but the assembly is not flat. Does the outside (red lens) come off? and how? or is there a way to remove the assembly from the trunk side?
