2004 Ford Taurus 80,000 miles

Okay, so its my grandmas car, I am borrowing it. I went to come home from the store the other day and it wouldn't go into gear. (You know when your steering wheel is turned to far, so you can't put it into gear? that is what it felt like.) It wouldn't go into gear. I tried and tried, and finally, as I was still turning the key, I would put it in gear. That seemed to be the only way to put it in gear. It was fine once it was out of park, but if it was put back into park, I would have to turn off the car and start it as I was putting it into gear. I now just put it into neutral before starting it, and then it works fine. Why would this be??
