Just got new tires for Taurus. Noticeable shake in steering wheel, especially when let off gas at about 60mph. Rebalanced tires, but still have problem. Tire mechanic drove car, & when he put it in gear, it hopped. Car had been doing this for a few weeks, & I had to really keep my foot on the brake hard when shifting. Popped hood & saw that engine was vibrating (actually shaking) when in drive. Mechanic said it is most likely a worn out transmission support, specifically the one on the driver's side at the back.

Does this sound right? The parts store has replacement assemblies for about $40 each. Is this something I could undertake with a "shade tree" mechanic? If so, any pointers would be appreciated.
