2002 Ford Taurus Temp Running Hot/Heater Not Working Proper

2002 Ford Taurus Automatic 70,000 miles

The temp gauge is running hot, but the engine light is not coming on. Also, I noticed a few weeks ago that the heater is only producing heat for a few minutes and then the fan starts to produce cold air...

check coolant system for leak
check water pump
do a headgasket test
