Recently began noticing a significant whine/hum when driving or idling that was worse with turning the wheels. Mech agreed it was power steering pump. Not an immediate hazard, but embarrassing noise-much worse than wd normally be expected. Replaced steering pump and idler pulley. Did not help-maybe worse. Discovered was a rebuilt pump and told did not sell new pumps. Could it be a defective replacement? Too much to spend to have not solved the problem!

This is a common problem on Ford pumps. Remanufactured replacements often make noise also for a number of reasons. There are ways to fill the system than puts a minimal amount of air into the fluid which is a major cause of noise. That air will eventually rise to the top and disappear. Many of the remanufactured pumps come with a notice right in the box to expect them to make noise for the first 500 miles. Defective pumps are not that uncommon either.
