2002 Ford Taurus Problem with Heating

During the summer, if I needed to defrost my cars windows the defroster would work and then I have to wait until the next day for the A/C to kick in. Now during the winter months, my heater only blows vented air. Can you tell me what may be the problem?

Air not hot enough or can not control the flow
check switch and check for vacuum leak if flow issue
if not hot enough warm engine and check heater hoses and let me know if both hot or not
