MY Taurus has begun to cut out or backfire on acceleration when passin sanother car at 50 mph or higher. It put me in a difficult situation on the highway two days ago. What ikely is the source of the problem?

Many possibilities
check fuel pressure and do a fuel flow test suspect fuel pump
check it for tune up and replace parts as needed
check MAF sensor, run a code test
