2000 Ford Taurus car wont shift into drive

I heard a light clunk today driving the car. Then a flashing exclaimation mark was flashing on the console in the tach gauge. The car shifts into reverse and into forward gears and moves but the shifting is rough and it will not upshift into d2 or drive
