My smog pump pulley stopped working and broke my serpintine belt. I was told that I could remove the pulley and the pump and buy a shorter belt and run like that as long as the belt dosen't hit itself. Is this true? what risks are there by taking this step? I just can't afford to pay $160 to have it replaced right now. Thank you.

that is true and only thing it does is bypass some of the emissions system so you may not be able to pass smog testing if state requires it.
