About 2 yrs. ago my heating and cooling system began to malfunction. I took it to my mechanic to check it out and he said that I needed to replace the oval console panel where the tape player and the control knobs for the heating and cooling are located. At first I thought that the control knobs were pneumatic but I checked and old panel a friend had and did not see how it could be pnematic. The problem is that when I want heat it comes out cold or very little heat and when I want cold it comes out hot. When I rotate the knobs I get a variety of heating and cooling. What could be the problem or cause of this? And is this repairable. What can I do to fix. (need more heat during winter!)

Before we blame the HVAC panel, let's start with the basics. DO you have enough coolant in the system. Without enough coolant, you WON'T get any heat. Check the thermostat. It may be an stuck open position. You will get very little heat if it is stuck open.
