Engine Mechanical problem
1999 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 285k miles

My a/c compressor is shot, I called part stores and they have a bypass pulley for it so I don't have replace the compressor right now. When I called a few shops and asked them if they could install a bypass pulley they tell me they don't make them for my car, it wont work or just don't want to do it. why do they do this? Any advice on what to do will be very helpful. thank you

If I had to guess, it is because there is no real money to be made. They would rather sell you a new compressor.
