Take it to a radiator shop and have them test the coolant for leaking head gaskets. They should be able to tell you exactly whats wrong with it.

It may not be getting fuel. Check fuel pump pressure and check to make sure there is a good hot blue snapping spark to the plugs. Finally, if the engine starts with starting fluid, then you know it is fuel related.

Thanks I forgot to reply back last week, it was the water pump. Broken in three pieces. Plastic go figure. New ones metal and running great. Thanks for the replies though they did help and I checked all the other stuff as well.

Make sure the coolant is full, check the thermostat is working, make sure the radiator isn't blocked with sludge and corrosion, check to make sure the radiator hoses are not collapsing, and make sure the cooling fans are turning on.

Let me know what you find.

Check the fuse for the fan, then if it's ok replace the ECT elctronic coolant temp sensor, runs about 20.00 do it when engine is cold...if you do it fast enough, you won't loose but a few drops of coolant! It's located just above the tranny on the right side of the motor, as seen from the front of the car...there are 2 sensors replace the one on the left.

Engine Cooling problem
1997 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive

The car gets hot and smells like its burning then starts to lose power. I noticed that the electric fans werent coming on. But when I turn the AC on the fans come on it sounds like a temp sensor but I looked and cant see where it is. Could you tell me if it sounds like this could be the problem and where the temp sensors are?

I checked continuity in the sensor and the circuit is open with no resistance but when I checked the wires to see if there was resistance in the rest of the loop I git 58 ohms of resistance? It looks like there is two sensors one only has one wire coming out of it the other has two thats the one I checked.

My car (97 Ford Taurus 6.0) was overheating, so I took it to the gas station to put some water in the radiator reservoir. As I was filling it up, I watched this light brown substance come leaking out the bottom of my car (passenger side, under the hood). The next day, my car overheated again, and the reservoir was empty already, so I took it in to a shop and they said it was the heater core, and it's going to be over $600 to fix it. Is this an accurate price, or is there something else I can ask them to do that will be less expensive? He said the hole was pretty good sized, and he'd have to take the whole dash out to get to the heater core. Is that true?
