Heater problem

Today my heater went out. Of course I called my mechanic because nothing would come on, I mean, no heat, air nothing. Then it came on out of no where. Then it went out again. SO I went to my mechanic and he could not look at it because it starting working. Its a safety issue to me not to be able to use my defrosters and if its going on and off, is there anything I can look at to see if its correctable, maybe a switch, or short fuse? I am very frustrated that I can only get help when I am completely out of a heatering/air system.
