I have a 1997 Taurus GL, 4s4n transmission. I have a grinding noise where the passenger side drive axle enters the transmission. Is this a transmission rebuild or an easier to solve problem? The transmission and engine run great and I'm afraid he repair will cost more than the car. Thanks.

1st step should be to check if the axle at fault or the tranny
remove and check the axle

Replaced the wheel bearing and drive axle. Noise comes precisely from where the drive axle enters the transmission.

Then suspect the transaxle
check with local tranny shop as at this point I would have the tranny rebuilt
or get a used tranny from the junk yard
