1997 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 140k miles

When replacing the converter is it all one unit or can I just cut the converter from the pipes and install a new one.

On some vehicles you can. It depends on the vehicle. Take it to an exhaust shop for inspection.
