1996 Ford Taurus transmission not working

transmission works when car first started after driving it just a short ways it quits working when you shut it off and let it set for awhile it will work again for short time and than quit again. any thought out there?

Check and adjust tranny fluid
check for tranny codes
and or suspect internal tranny failure
