Electrical problem
1996 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Hello I'm having trouble with my Taurus and need help I don't know much about cars. These are the symptoms I'm experiencing:
-sometimes wont start right away, just turns over and dies, needs gas to start most of the time
-idles very low and ruff, below 1000 rpm
-lights dim in and out especially when first starting up or when idling
-when first starts up there is barley any acceleration even when peddle is to the metal.
-brakes give out when idling low and sometimes just stalls out if not given gas
I have tried replacing the battery, cleaning the spark plugs and testing the alternator with a multimeter while running the car. It helps it idle higher when I put it in neutral when at stop.
I'm homeless and traveling and living in my car so I cant make a donation but would so appreciate any help so that I can try to fix the problem myself.

A couple things could be causing the problem. First, I'm sorry to hear that you are living in the car. I wish I could help.

As far as the engine problems, have you checked for vacuum leaks? I also question the idle air control module (IAC). Has the check engine light come on?

Yes the check engine light has come on and I was thinking of trying to find a way to have the codes checked. However it has been on for a while because the flex fuel sensor broke a while ago. I will also check into vacuum leaks, is that something I could do myself? Also should I try to take off the ICV and clean it myself as well?

The IAC is on the throttle body and can be removed and cleaned. You need to get a special cleaner for it. As far as the vacuum leak, under the hood you will see several small hoses that are vacuum hoses. Check for any that are dry rotted, broken, disconnected. I don't know where you are, but if you are not in CA, most nationally recognized parts stores will scan the computer for free.

Let me know what you find.
