I just spent $500plus dollars for a tune up and to replace the control module. Now my battery light is on, they tested the alternator, said it tested fine, but I should replace it anyway because it will probably go out unexpectedly, in a week or a month or. And of course theres another $300plus. Do you agree, or could it be something else, possibly the battery itself. Model is gl and has 3.0 litre engine. It is now wednesday, I took the car into another shop they did a charging system test for $29.99 and determined the battery is fine but the alternator is in "overcharge condition. Max output is 254 amp" what does that mean?Is it o.K. To keep driving?Should I just pay the $300plus and have a new alternator installed?

254 amps isnt possible, 130 is the max on Fords, also hook up a voltmeter to the battery, read the volts, should be between 13.8 and 15.0, with all accessories on, if it's constantly higher, replace the alternator, the regulator is built onto the back of it, and if you know what your doing it's fairly simple to replace the regulator part and save some money. A rebuilt should cost about 150. So the addition is the shop labor? I did not see your post or I would have helped sooner, if you want detailed instructions to install the alternator let me know, but I will need to know which engine you have 3.0 3.0 24 valve, SOHC or dual overhead cams.
