My daughters car (94 Taurus) stopped running the other day. I checked it out and so far have found that the injectors are firing, the fuel pump is priming and sending fuel, and it fires temporarily when starting fluid is shot into the throttle body. A guy at the parts store talked her into buying a new fuel pump, but I picked up a new fuel filter for her and in the process determined the pump is fine. I had her turn on the key while I was under there and the pump shot fuel through the line giving me a gasoline bath. The gas seemed to smell like "gas light" as I called it so I had her buy some HEET to dewater her fuel. She also picked up some heavy duty stuff that is supposed to be even better and we put that into her tank. Car still doesn't want to start, though it cranks over fine, but will fire if starting fluid is injected into the throttle body. Where should I go next? No check engine light is showing. Any help would be great.

Check for spark first. Use an inline spark tester. Even though the engine may seem to fire on starting fluid, it could simply be "compression ignition" so to speak. If you have spark, then you are not getting fuel to the injectors. In this case, you need to check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. There could be a blockage enroute to the fuel rail. If you have good fuel pressure there, then it is time to dig a bit deeper. On the "rear" of the engine, near the rear of the intake manifold, there is a round connector that carries the pulses to the injectors. It may have come unplugged. Post back with results, and I will try to help you more.
