1993 Ford Taurus wont go into 3rd gear

Was driving on the freeway and the car downshifted and wont go back into 3rd gear/overdrive. Am I screwed?

How are 1st and 2nd? Is the transmission staying in 1st? Or does it shift to 2nd OK? If it does shift to 2nd, you probably have an internal failure that will require removal of the transmission to repair. If it stays in 1st, it is more likely a speed sensor.

First and second shifted fine. I drove home later in the day and the car worked fine. Possibly a tranny filter?

Possible. Also possible that your fluid level might be low or that there could have been a solenoid stuck or a valve stuck.

Since the investment is small, I mught suggest that you change the oil and filter.
