1993 Ford Taurus Car starts but can't shift out of park unl

I can start the car in park but can't shift into any other area on columm. If I start the car with the shifterr in neutral I can then shift into reverse or go forward. I wonder if a used streering column will fix this issue?

1st step would be to check if you have brake light when stepped on brake paddle
if no light check fuses and suspect brake switch on top the paddle
