One out of 10 times I turn the key to start the car, I notice that I do not hear the fuel pump kick on. Car will not start at that time. Sometimes a tap on the gas tank will get it to start.

Fuel pump? relay problem?

Any help appreciated,

If hitting the tank makes it start, the problem is there. It could be the pump or a poor connection at the plug that goes connects to the pump. Before replacing the pump, check the wiring to it and the plug.

Let me know what you find.
