A few days ago I bought a 1990 ford taurus. V6 3.0. At the car lot the battery was dead so they put in a battery from a small truck. I took it for a drive about 5miles. Decided it drove good and took it home. When pulling out of the lot it stalled out but restarted right away. I drove it home with no problems. The next day I took it for a 30 min drive on the highway and in town. We stopped to eat lunch and afterward it wouldn't start. We went to advance auto and picked up plugs and wires. We changed 3 wires and drove it back home. After a bit of reading online I took off the IAC and cleaned it with carb cleaner. We then drove for 30 mins again and stopped at a friends house. I shut off the car and started it back up 5min later to move it. After that it wouldn't start again. A friend helped me change the plugs and wires but still we were haveing problems. We also cleaned the metal points on the distributor, on top and inside due to rust. I ended up staying the night because we couldn't keep it running. I took the module sensor off and had that tested three times. They said it was good. All and all I have put on new plugs and wires, cleaned the Iac. Replaced the coil and tested the sensor. Sometimes I get spark and sometimes I don't. At the moment I do not have a power tester because I don't not have the funds to continue guessing. It will start and run, sometimes stall but after it's off it will not start again for awhile. No warning lights are on and i'm lost so any help or suggestions would be apprieciated.
ok, we started the car a few min after I last posted and made it to the corner just before the auto store. After a few hours of talking and trial and error one of the guys clocked out and stopped over to help us out. For the most he knew older models and didn't care for anything over 1985 but he did try out a few things and explained a few other basics. The ignition module which plugs under the distributor was tested three times and came back positive and they said it was ok but I still question it. After he messed with it he told me that I shoud simply replace the distributor and be done with it. The problem is that that part costs $90 and i've got all of my money tied up in this car already. So i'm considering taking a trip to the local junk yard and pulling one or two distributors + the ignition modules out and replacing mine with one of those for a lot cheaper quick fix. The auto store tech also said that the rust looked as if at some point a radiator hose had busted. Meaning I should replace the entire thing. What are the chances of finding a cheap used distributor at the junk yard to get me home. Should I chance that or simply buy it new and be done with it.
