2003 ford ranger, 58,000 miles; 3.0 engine; there is a whining noise coming from the back of the engine. The local ford dealership said there was no problem. I have had a couple of people tell me there is a problem with the distibutor gear thing on the back of the engine making a whining noise. I would like to no what this "thing" is called and does that sound like the problem to you? Thanks, mark

I had the same problem with my 2003 Taurus. It would whin or chirp. My problem was my Camposition senor located ontop of the oil pump drive assembly was bad. I replaced it and it hasn't done it since. I located the noise by using an automotive stethescope. The sensor on my car was under the air intake assembly where it meets the engine. I hope this helps and I hope your car runs like new again soon. Best of luck!
