My son has a Ford Ranger XLT 4-cylinder with a stick. A year ago, the clutch was repaired. I know for sure that the throw out bearing constituted part of the replacement kit. Anyway, recently the clutch started to make a grinding noise when disengaged. When you let out on the pedal, no noise is present. What exactly would a bad pilot bearing cause?

What to check next

Diagnostic guidance. Suggested checks and possible repairs are separate from the owner's reported results.

Have the noise evaluated with the clutch service history available. Ask what findings distinguish the release mechanism, pilot bearing and other possible sources before authorizing disassembly.

If your pilot bearing is bad it will cause the throw out bearing to go bad quickly. So you would get the same sound as if it were the throwout bearing. Also will cause damage to the transmision shaft. The only way to find out is to take upart and inspect.

Problem with the clutch on a 1995 Ford Ranger XLT

A 1995 Ranger developed a grinding noise with the clutch pedal depressed after earlier clutch work. The owner asked whether a pilot bearing could cause the symptom.

Reported outcome: No inspection findings or completed repair were reported.

The reply's claims about pilot-bearing damage were not confirmed on this truck. Pedal-dependent noise alone did not identify a failed bearing.
