excessive smoke on 1988 ranger 2.3l 4 cyl

huge amount of smoke, not black, has moisture and black soot or oil in tailpipe,,,has high mileage,,,idle is a little rough, but not too bad, still has good acceleration

Sounds like you need an overhaul or a new short block. The 2.3 engine is a very old design engine that goes back to the Pinto and before that is was a German engine. It has a penchant to wear out in about 125K
