How to replace fuel pump

Hi, I am getting no fuel to the engine, and hear no pump priming whin I turn the key on. How do I diagnose and change the fuel pump?

Fuel pump module is in the fuel tank the only way out tank must come down. Here is a guide to help walk you through the steps.

My 2005 Ford Ranger (3.0L V6 - Edge package - 135,000 miles) died while driving a few days ago. It wouldn't start again until the next day, and then died after running for 1-2 minutes (as if it wasn't getting fuel). This happened approx. 2 years ago; I replaced the fuel pump and inertia swtitch, and (except for an intermittent "check engine" light, during which it would use more fuel and sometimes idle roughly) it ran fine until it died a few days ago. I recently replaced plugs, plug wires, ignition coil, and fuel filter; the fuses and relays all checked good, and my battery and alternator tested good at an auto parts store. I even pulled the fuel pump and inspected it - it looked as clean as when I installed it 2 years ago, but I really don't know what to be looking for. Right now I'm completely at a loss to figure out what the problem(s) may be.
What do you suspect could be causing this?

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis,finding out what's going on.

Fuel pump was replaced 4 weeks ago, as the truck was just stalling while driving, now the problem is starting all over again. While driving the truck just stalls, and will not restart for a few hours. Then the truck starts and runs for a week or so, and the problem shows up again. Please help

Lets recheck the fuel pressure before we blame the fuel pump again and comeback with the readings-could also be the fuel pump relay or the inertia switch throwing a fit

My husband has been told to: 1) drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump & 2) pull the bed off the truck to replace the fuel pump. Are either of these the correct way?

Yes, you can pull the bed off or drop the tank. I find it faster and easier to pull the bed off, but only if you have help to do it.

Our Ranger recently died on us, we took it to a nearby dealership and they are telling us they will need to replace the inertia switch, the fuel pump, and the fuel pump relay. They said it looks like the resistance from the fuel pump burned up the inertia switch and fuel pump relay. Parts and Labor will be around $2,000 plus tax.

Does that sound reasonable? I did call another mechanic and he said it sounded fishy, that he has never heard of that happening. But he hasn't had the truck in front of him to diagnose.

It does sound fishy I know those inertia switches go bad and they have a relocation kit for the new one. Let me see if I can find a bulletin for that year one.

It looks like your inertia switch is already under the right kick panel where they relocate them too on the earlier trucks. Usually when a fuel pump fails it will pop a fuse. They usually don't take out the interia switch or relay. That's why they put a fuse in the circuit to protect the wires components and reduces chances of fires. What is your zip code so I can see what a fair price for a fuel pump in your area is.

I have trouble starting the truck on cold mornings. The problem has worsened. Ether usually gets it going but did not work the other day. It was 19 degrees out.
The fuel filter was changed but did not cure the problem. Two things have been suggested: Replacing the fuel pump because the pressure might be too low for cold starts. And two, a fuel enrichment valve has a loose wire or needs replacing. I can't find any reference to this enrichment valve. Please tell me what you think. Thanks,

Ok no cold start valve on this engine first off. You need to check the resistance (ohm's) of the coolant temp sensor get back to me with that and the temp of the engine at time of check and I will let you know if it is bad ok. Thanks.

I am having trouble with my estimate program but its 2hrs labor for the fuel pump replacement and.7hrs for replacing the inertia switch. Ask them for a break down of each labor charge and part charge?Let me know so I can see what there charging yo so much for. Because if you figure 3hrs labor say 375 labor on the way high end. Those are some expensive parts.

Have the fuel pressure checked out -if okay start by checking the coolant temperature sensor resistances

The CTS is similar in operation with a choke on a carb system its job is to tell the computer to give fuel -lengthening the pulse width -cold engine needs more fuel during initial cold starts.

That's some crazy labor charges I only see 2hrs labor to replace the fuel pump and.7hrs for the interia switch. Suggested list price on the fuel pump is 421.67 the fuel filter is 36.71 the interia switch is 61. So I would take it some where else. To have it looked at and repaired.
