2005 Ford Ranger Fuel Pump?

I was was idling and my truck just died. It wouldn't start and no gas was going to the engine. I was able to get it running by keeping the intertia switch down. I took it to the mechanic and they said the fuel pump went bad. Does this sound right? It was different how it worked while holding down the intertia switch and wouldn't start without it. Why would that happen?

Remove the inertia switch and jumper the wire connector the fuel pump will operate w/o the inertia switch
