2005 Ford Ranger Changing gears

It is extremely difficult to shif into anothe gear when driving. Often times it requires a hard push to get it into the next gear. If I stop and turn the engine off, it shifts without difficulty.

It sounds like you having a problem with the hydraulic clutch. It has a clutch master cylinder at the pedal and a slave cylinder at the clutch end. One of them is leaking and you have now drawn air into the system. You will have to determine which component is leaking, replace it and bleed out the system.
