the plugs are sooted up and black smoke and soot come from the exaust

IT's running rich, too much fuel in the air - fuel mix.

Are there any codes in the computer? Or CEL lit?

Various sources including the PCM thinking the coolant is not coming to temperature (ect) or it really isn't coming to temperature (T-stat). A bad o2 sensor can cause the mal adjustment.

I would start at the codes.
