The steering wheel of my ford ranger will not turn. The ignition turns on and the engine starts but the battery light comes on. The truck can be put into drive and start moving but when I try to turn the wheel nothing happens. What is going on?

wheel turns freely. or it suddenly stops like its hitting the steering wheel lock
