Our Clutch seems to have partially gone out. Although the truck will start when the clutch is pressed in, sometimes we cannot engage the gears (no noise, grinding or other signs... just will not engage in any gear). An hour later... there is no problem and everything works normally.

We have been quoted a minimum of $800 to repair the clutch, and as much as $1,400 (+) if they have to drop the Transmission. This seems like a lot... and I thought you had to drop a transmission to check the bell housing regardless?

Please advise.

You've probably already gotten it fixed by now but if you buy the parts yourself and take it in for labor it goes down a lot. Estimated costs run from about 450-700 in my area. However if you have a good friend that can help you and both of y'all know a decent amount about cars you should be able to do it yourself and depending on if you have to replace both cylinders and the clutch disk and pressure plate or if you just need a new clutch disk it'll cost you anywhere from 100 - 350 dollars. My clutch kit cost me 125, slave clyinder cost 50, master cylinder cost 60. The biggest pain is bleeding the system after you're done. Even the transmission is doable and yes you have to drop the transmission. Maybe not completely but it does have ot be lowered. Hope this helps.
