2000 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I replaced my alternator and battery, but the battery light on the control panel is on. Also the engine dies when I disconnect one of the battery cables.

Does the battery get recharged or does it go dead? Also, it's not uncommon for the engine to die when the battery is dosconnected.
