Although it doesn't have a check engine light, I'd check for pending codes.
There are a few tests you can perform before buying the car (engine vacuum, fuel pressure, compression, etc). All these tests can tell you a lot about the shape of the engine.
Best case scenario, the problem comes from a bad sensor (IAT, ECT?), You replace it, problem solved.
I'd do a little bit of research online to find a guideline on buying a used car.
By the way, if the truck has been maintained well, 166000 miles is not too bad. You should be able to get a little more out of it. (I drive a 1990 Ranger with 250000 maybe 350000 miles on it. Still runs strong!).
