The rear end has started making a whinning noise even when sitting still, maybe three weeks ago. Now, the dash board light indicator for 2wd / 4wd flashes. Am I about to lose a transfer case and if so what do I replace?

Ok on the 4x4 light now you probably have a bad transfer case motor, this is a motor on the back of the t-case that looks like a window motor and when it goes out it makes the light flash and usually locks it in 4x4 low too. I will include a pic of the t-case motor too. No on the noise where is it coming from a rear end can not make noise sitting still as there are no gears moving when stopped. I am very sorry that is has taken so long to get to your question I just saw it today.
