1998 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 120k miles

98 ranger 4.0L auto. Trans 2wd
Just started idling rough and sputters or jerks up to 2000 rpm. I just got back from a trip up to the mountains and thats when it started. It almost feels like a trans. Problem but if I rev the motor in park it almost backfires and misses. Could it be the fuel pump? Or what?

I'd start by checking for codes. It may shed some light on your problem.
Start there and come back with what you find out.
There are many possibilites as why a car idles rough, so let's try to narrow it down.
