I have a 1998 Ford Ranger 4.0L automatic tran. with an intermitant problem. The Overdrive Off light starts flashing and then the shifting gets very jerky. When I pull over and restart the engine the problem goes away temporarily..

I took it to a ford dealer and they suspected the torque converter clutch and replaced the selonoid, XL2Z-7G136-AA and said it fixed the problem. The bill was $500+. On the way home from the dealer, about 3 miles. the same problem re-occured..

What is the problem? can I drive it 'as-is'..?
