1998 Ford Ranger 4X4 high and 4X4 low lights flashing

The 4X4 high and 4X4 low lights are flashing periodically in my truck as I am driving and when i first turn the key on. The lights flash 6 times then quit, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Best way to go about this is to have the tranny codes read
its trying to let you know that you have a tranny issue and need to be looked at
