I have bought a 98 ford ranger 4x4 automatic with 4.0. It has the electric shift to 4 wheel drive when I turn the switch the tranfer case engages but the wheels do not lock in the drive shaft is turning but the wheels will not pull. What do I need to check

Sounds like the automatic hubs are not engaging on the end of the axels, you might have to have them checked or replaced
