1997 Ford Ranger how to install a 12-volt toggle switch

I would like to know the correct way to install a toggle switch to be hooked up to a rotatating warning light mounted on top of my pick-up which is a 12-volt light. I certainly dont want to short anything out in the process. thanks for any info you may offer me.
