I recently purchased a 1994 Ford Ranger with automatic 4-speed and 4-wheel drive with 90,000 miles. The truck is in great shape and runs smoothly. Occassionally when I put it into D for drive it will not link up. It goes into reverse, neutral and park without a problem. I have tried shifting into 2 or 1 and again it will not connect to a forward mode. It doesn't do this all the time, just some times. It seems like it does it more when the temperatures have been extremely cold (0-to-15 degrees). Once it does go into gear, sometimes it does it with a hard shift and sometimes it just goes into place. After the drive connects, it shifts freely into each gear (1 to overdrive range) without any problems at all. I have driven it in town and on the highways and the up and down shifting is great. The only problem is the occasional not going into Drive at all. What do I need to do and what could be the problem?

Start by making sure the trans fluid is full and clean. When was the last trans service? There is a chances the filter is plugging.

Let me know.
