Engine Mechanical problem
1985 Ford Ranger 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

This past July this truck did not pass smog cert due to "timing being off 10 degrees" EGR visual inspection was a "pass." We replaced distributor, d cap, wires, plugs, ignition modulator, fuel filter, pressure regulator, & did oil change. Truck runs fine, but did not pass smog test due to "EGR valve and timing being "off" just three weeks ago." What would cause EGR valve to fail in just four months, and what is the difference between an EGR valve and EGR sensor? Thanks much for any input...Frustrated in California

The EGR sensor tells the computer how far the EGR Valve is open.
