Hello: Yes, but the trouble with an idiot light is they warn you way to late, and when it does come on you stop, oil or no oil. Let the engine cool and allow the oil up in the engine to drain into the pan. Then possibly drive a short distance and repeat. I have seen engines lock up within seconds of oil light coming on. From what you describe, your engine ran out of oil (no oil pressure) no oil pressure= no oil, does not matter if the engine was full of oil and running on the ground. When I speak of no oil, I mean no oil to the vital parts, you need oil pressure to do this. If the light comes on you have no oil pressure for some reason. If you drive the engine without oil pressure it wil cause serious damage. The oil pump drive shaft may have sheared, the oil pump pickup in the oil pan may have fallen off. The oil pressure bypass relief valve may have stuck open. There are a number of reasons to loose oil pressure. If you checked the dipstick and it showed plenty of oil, then it was one of those things probably. Also a bearing may have went out causing loss of oil pressure and shortly later the enging seized.
Good luck with your problem
Darryl.
