Engine Performance problem
1998 Other Ford Models 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

Hi, I own a Ford Ka, 1998, 100,000 mies on the clock.
If, for example, I am driving on the motorway and cruizing at 60mph. I decide to overtake a truck. On rapid and medium acceleration, the engine first revs very high, then the revs decline and then the car accelerates. Acceleration is slow / delayed.

At lower speeds, i.e. driving through town it does not require much force on the accelerator to keep the car driving, it is almost like the car drives itself. I control the speed of the car through the clutch and brake. If i were tio touch none of the foot pedals the car would keep moving and very slowly slow down.
This is obviously not good. Any ideas what might be the problem?

This is a good one. When driving through town, with foot "off" the gas, and you push in the clutch, does the engine drop to idle or does it stay at the same rpms? Also, when on the highway, and you accelerate to pass another vehicle, does the engine rev like the clutch is slipping? Please advise.

Sorry for the delay in replying but ive been ill and not had the time to answer your query.

On driving through town, off the gas and i push in the clutch the engine still revs - it does not drop down to idle.

I didnt know what clutch slpiiing meant till i googled it but i have to agree. The engine does rev like the clutch is slipping.

Any ideas if this is the fault? What will i need to replace / repair? Any idea on cost?

thanks matthew

When driving through town and you depress the clutch and the engine stays at high RPMs, if you "crack" the throttle a couple of times, does the engine drop to an idle? I'm thinking the problem is 2 fold. Sticking throttle cable AND slipping clutch. Sall clutch replacement at a small shop would cost $300 to $400.
