1996 Other Ford Models Steering does not go back to center

1996 Ford Fiesta Diesel steering does not go back to center. If turning in either direction i.e. left or right, the wheels remain in the same direction and they need to be manually centered as the steering wheel does not self center as normal. I suspect the column universal joint, but I want to be sure as much as possible. Your thoughts

If that were the case you would hear it, and if you put your head under the dash and turn the wheel back and forth, you will see it...have the alignment checked out...
