1970 Other Ford Models V8

I have a question about improving the torque on a 70 Ranchero. The engine is currently a 351C with the 4v heads and a 650 carb. This truck is owned by a good friend of mine and he tows a 2000lb bass boat and is looking to get a little more torque. He has stock exhaust manifolds and 2 1/2" exhaust with flowmasters. He is running a FMX automatic.

Now I told him if he wanted to increase lower end torque and increase fuel mileage he should install a 570 Holley street Avenger carb. Due to the smaller primaries he woul see a crisper throttle and better fuel mixture at a lower rpm.

So, am I right about this theory or am I way out in left field on this one?

You are right about the lower end torque but he will comprimise the high end torque. If he wants low end torque he can get new headers, 4-2-1 flow master headers with 3 inch exhaust, or you can use the 2 1/2 inch. Or simply install a manual tranny or change to a 6 speed tranny. With extra low gearing.

Also if he got his engine rebored it would help dramatically low and high end torque.

I would go to longer and earlier duration cam first just don't go wild on lift and your idle will stay mild and you gain torque and horse

just my idea
