Hello. Have an 1988GT Mustang 5.0 with appx 97k miles on it.
Tried to start it up the other day. Put the key in the ignition, got the instrumentation lights on, heard the pump run in the back and the door open ding. When I turned the key to start position, everything went dead however. No lights, sounds, nothing.
Made sure battery was good. Also swapped batteries. No change. Checked cable connections on top of battery, from the negative pole to engine block and from positive side of starter relay to starter. Everything snug and tight, Finally I connected a set of jumpstart cables to the neg side of the battery and to two different grounding points on the frame. All the lights came on and it started right up. Any ideas where I start looking? Thanks. Rolf

Essentially it sounds like you bypassed the negative cable to get it to start? IF so, it sound like the negative cable is bad or there is a bad (dirty?)Connection at the negative cable attaching points. I have seen cables that will have a pinhole in the casing and corode the cable. IF I understand it this correctly.
