Cold air intake

96 mustang 6cyl. Approx 149000 miles
i have a cold air intake system that tucks the filter in the passenger fender. In doing this there is almost a 90 degree turn in the pipe itself.
the check engine light was on when I bought it and I was told by more than one person ( including the police officer who sold it to me) that the reason is because the mass air is more or less getting two "air flows" due to the reflection in the tube.
is this possible and if so do they make an "adapter plate" so I can adapt the filter housing to the mass air? I have found similiar plates but nothing that lines up right for my setup. It is a stock mass air.

Why don't you return the vehicle to stock setup? Any advantages you've noticed with this intake system? I know that with certain setups, not sure of who's or what cars, with these cold air intakes, some vehicles have been ingesting water into the engine, not good. If your state has emission checks, light on will cause failure. Reason given for the light sounds pretty lame to me, the manufacturer of this system should offer a fix if it's true. Imo, anyone who wants to hop-up a vehicle should use whatever factory parts are available, such as Ford's available kits for the Mustang. All pieces are calibrated, very important, to work with each other. Start putting pieces on your engine, it changes operating parameters leading to problems, unless they're calibrated to work within the pcm limits.

I like the improvement of the cold air.
But the mass air doesnt like the setup.
It hasnt caused problems other than the light being on
would rather buy an adapter plate than a stock air intake system from ford
