I have a service engine light and to car to local place had ecm hooked up and was determined that was the egr. will replacing the egr valve correct this matter.

It should correct the problem as long as something else didnt make the egr go bad. Most likely the service engine light was activated by the bad egr though and fixing the egr will solve your problem.
