While the car is running and for about 20 minutes after it's been turned off I smell strong gas fumes from the rear of the car. No visible leaks. Any guesses?

Ok if it isn't the gas cap then I would check the EVAP Canister vent soenoid. It is at the left (drivers) side rear just behind the tire near the fuel tank. Let me know what you find.

Racefan thanks for the quick response. It's not the gas cap or EVAP solenoid on drivers side. It appears to be a very small leak on the passengers side that is pooling on the upper lip of the gas tank. I can't tell if it is from a hose. Any other ideas or should I take it to a shop?

OK so is you fill neck on the passanger side like my 98 is? If so then check the fill hose for cracks and loose clamps also check the vent hose next to the fill hose. As far as taking it in depends on you mechanical skills or how comfortable you feel doing the work yourself. If this is all ok then I would recommend dropping the tank to make sure there is no hole on top or that the sending unit isn't leaking and so on. Let me know what you find.
So on an off note any performance mods?

Thanks for the info. As for as mods go, I put on a K&N CAI, dual exhaust w/ flowmasters, lowered suspension with 18-9" wheels on front and 18-10" on back with 285/35 on back and 245/40 on front. I also have a diablo predator high performance tune on it. It probably puts out as much HP as a stock GT but with the gas mileage of a V6.

Mine had the same thing. It was the filler neck gromet on the tank itself where the filler neck passed through. I think it was 20 bucks or something

I had the same problem on my 2001, it was the gasket where the filler neck goes into the tank. It also gave me a check fuel cap warning

I also smell gas under the wheel wells rear diver side, where the fill hose is located on my MAZDA '96 Familia-Protege! Do you have a picture where the EVAP can is? I cant find it or probably my car isnt equipped w/this. Any Idea? My car was released in South East Asia.
